‘What I am trying to achieve is to be what I am to the fullest. Black to the fullest, a musician to the fullest, a homosexual to the fullest’. To experience music in the strongest sense of the term, by confronting the establishment of culture, its racial and sexual taboos: this was Julius Eastman’s endeavour. Legend has it that at its premiere in New York in 1974, where Feminine was played in a hall, another work by the composer--which, but for its name, Masculine, has been lost without a trace—was played at the same time in an adjoining room.
