Harp, cello, double bass: Caimin Gilmore’s BlackGate is composed of those three instruments rarely heard together and forming a singular alloy of arpeggios, friction, plucked strings and vibrating textures. From Lavinia Meijer to Philip Glass, from Gabriella Smith to Ann Cleare and Benedict Schlepper-Connolly, the programme explores the string family in its fragilities, tensions and physical power. Lines stretch out, hollow themselves out, and gradually become charged with electricity. A concert in chiaroscuro, driven by the desire to push timbre to its limits.
