Gay Guerilla

Julius Eastman (1940-1990) a été redécouvert il y a quelques années seulement. Figure singulière du courant minimaliste américain, il est l’auteur d’une musique brute et organique, familière de la pop et du jazz, souvent accompagnée de titres dénonçant le carcan social imposé aux noirs et aux homosexuels aux États-Unis. Militant et témoin historique de l’émergence des mouvements raciaux et de libération sexuelle des années 1960, il compose Gay Guerilla en 1979, dix ans après les émeutes de Stonewall dont nous célébrons les 50 ans en 2019.

American minimalist composer Julius Eastman (1940-1990) was rediscovered several years ago. His music was raw and organic, incorporating elements of pop and jazz, and he often chose titles denouncing the oppression and social struggles of blacks and gays in the USA. Politically active himself, he was a historic witness to the emergence of the sexual revolution and civil rights movements of the 1960s, composing Gay Guerilla in 1979, ten years after the Stonewall riots, of which 2019 marks the 50th anniversary.
