John Cage inventa presque par hasard le « piano préparé ». En glissant divers matériaux ou objets (vis, boulons, morceaux de caoutchouc, de plastique, de bambou, de laine…) entre les cordes d’un piano, il obtint un nouvel instrument, une sorte d’orchestre de percussions aux sonorités variées et inouïes. Bertrand Chamayou et Élodie Sicard s’emparent des premières pièces qu’il composa pour ce mystérieux instrument entre 1940 et 1945 à l’attention de son plus proche collaborateur, le danseur et chorégraphe Merce Cunningham.

John Cage invented the ‘prepared piano’ almost by accident. By sliding different objects (screws, bolts, pieces of rubber, plastic, bamboo, wool, etc.) between the strings of a piano, he created a new instrument, a percussion orchestra of sorts, with a wide range of new and unusual sounds. Bertrand Chamayou and Élodie Sicard present the first pieces he composed for this mysterious instrument between 1940 and 1945, for his closest collaborator, dancer and choreographer Merce Cunningham.
