After several years abroad, “The Sister” returns to Morocco to reunite with her family and stage a play. In the bourgeois living room where the family myth is replayed, swab —a code of propriety — imposes its silences and fault lines. Within this enclosed setting, Kenza Berrada brings to the surface what remains unspoken, until it reaches breaking point. The stage then shifts into a cabaret: with Kabareh Cheikhats, a cross-dressed male ensemble, the music of aïta — a popular form of song rooted in resistance and memory — fills the space. Orchestra, voices, and traditional rhythms shape a sonic dramaturgy in which celebration meets tension, and where the cry runs through bodies as much as through stories.
