After spending several years abroad, “The Sister” returns to Morocco for a family reunion and to stage a play. In the bourgeois living room, the family myth is replayed and the swab —a code of conduct— calls for silences and discrepancies. Within this enclosed setting, Kenza Berrada brings to the surface what remains unspoken, until it reaches a breaking point. The stage then shifts into a cabaret: with Kabareh Cheikhats, a cross-dressing male ensemble, the music of aïta — a popular form of song rooted in resistance and memory — fills the space. Orchestra, voices, and traditional rhythms shape a sonic dramaturgy in which celebration meets tension, and screaming cross bodies and stories equally.
