About
Founded in Strasbourg in 1983, Musica is one of Europe's most important festivals of experimental and new music.
Held annually from late September to early October, Musica presents around fifty artistic projects in all formats: from solo recitals to opera, through music theatre and multidisciplinary stage works, ensemble and orchestral concerts, experimental performances, sound installations, and socially engaged projects.
The festival promotes the recognition of creative music beyond institutional or commercial categories, seeking to embrace all innovative and meaningful approaches of today. Its core missions include artistic foresight on both national and international levels, support for artistic teams through production and expertise, and the commissioning of works from composers. Equally fundamental are all initiatives that foster the reception of works, the broadening of audiences, and mediation with all sectors of the population, especially young people.
In 2020, Mini Musica was launched as the festival’s program for young audiences and families, gradually expanding until becoming an independent festival in March 2026.
Based in Strasbourg (France), Musica benefits from the city’s strategic position as a European capital, seat of the European Parliament. A crossroads for professional exchanges in the music networks, the festival also develops international projects each year and highlights artists from particular countries, geographical regions, or cultural backgrounds, while contributing to the visibility and dissemination of French artistic projects.
In 2025, Musica joins forces with La Muse en Circuit (Alfortville) and all the French studios labeled as « Centre national de création musicale » (National Center for New Music) to create RISE (Réseau International de Sonorités Expérimentales), an international hub for production and promotion of experimental music supported by the French Ministry of Culture.
Between 2025 and 2028, alongside the Haute École des Arts du Rhin (HEAR) and partners in Germany and Switzerland, the festival is part of the European INTERREG project Les Trois Angles/Die drei Ecken, dedicated to the emergence and structuring of a cross-border scene for creative music.
Musica is a non-profit association under local law, chaired by Emelie de Jong and directed by Stéphane Roth.
Musica is supported by the French Ministry of Culture and DRAC Grand Est, the Grand Est Region, the City of Strasbourg, and the European Collectivity of Alsace.
