Georges Aperghis sets six voices and a viola in motion in a musical conversation with no centre and no hierarchy. The vocal ensemble EXAUDI and violist Tabea Zimmermann turn it into a lively, playful theatre of voices, open to the twists, rebounds and surprises of listening.
Premiered at the Donaueschingen Festival in 2025, Tell Tales is a large-scale polyphony for six voices and viola. Under the direction of James Weeks, EXAUDI sets in circulation a language whose meaning never quite comes into focus: words continually break down into rhythms, timbres and vocal gestures. Tabea Zimmermann moves through this weave of voices, harmonising it or shifting its balances. Of dizzying precision, the score unfolds through surges, offbeats and sudden turns, until its apparent disorder becomes a jubilant music. Each listener must find their own way through this labyrinth.
