For over 50 years, Kronos Quartet has been imaginatively pushing the boundaries of what a string quartet can be. Their repertoire includes landmark works of American string quartet music, as well as numerous projects drawing on popular and traditional music from around the world.

In 2025, the quartet joins forces with Norwegian artists Benedicte Maurseth and Kristine Tjøgersen. Both are composers—Maurseth rooted in traditional and folk music, Tjøgersen in contemporary composition—and together they have created Elja, a piece inspired by Nordic folk traditions. On stage, the four members of the quartet joined by Maurseth on vocals and fiddle use traditional Hardanger string instruments, distinguished from classical instruments by their sympathetic strings and intricate marquetry. This rich musical fusion is deepened by an electronic soundscape composed of natural recordings captured in Norway’s remote landscapes.
