Frederic Rzewski’s 36 variations on the revolutionary song El pueblo unido jamás será vencido are meaningful in more than one way. The combination of the musical diversity, virtuosity, and the collective emotional weight of the anthem makes this a particularly striking 20th-century work, and also a curious corner of Rzewski’s repertoire, into which he seldom ventures. The strength of contemporary music’s destiny may well have slipped between the lines. Let us listen again.
